No os engañaré, soy algo escéptico acerca de Ouya. No tanto por la capacidad del aparato sino por la viabilidad de los distintos rumbos, o más bien la deriva, a los que se ha abocado desde su lanzamiento. En cualquier caso, lo importante es que en mi salón hay una y durante las últimas semanas he escrutado los juegos de su tienda. Curiosamente, entre cientos de demos enmascaradas como versiones gratuitas y bastantes juegos con pagos in-app, encontré varios títulos disponibles para dispositivos Android —que también están en iOS— que normalmente se encuentran bajo pago pero que son totalmente gratuitos en Ouya. Una de esas perlas fue A Ride into the Mountains, un videojuego creado por Chia-Yu Chen y Lee-Kuo Chen actualmente fundadores del estudio taiwanés Sunhead Games.
La premisa de la obra es sencilla y se resume en las pocas frases que dan comienzo al título mientras nuestro protagonista corta algo de leña junto a su cabaña. En ellas se nos explica que la familia de nuestro héroe, Zu, ha protegido una reliquia en la montaña durante generaciones, previniendo que el mal la corrompiese. Un día, la reliquia perdió su brillo así que Zu cogió su arco, montó a su caballo, y partió para resolver el misterio. Lo que nos espera a continuación no es más que el transcurso del propio juego salteado, eso sí, de pequeñas escenas introductorias para cada etapa del viaje. Secuencias animadas que generalmente introducen una variación tenue en la mecánica. No encontraremos más historia que la de nuestro camino hacia las montañas… en el fondo, el juego no la necesita.
La mecánica básica de A Ride into the Mountains no es en absoluto innovadora y consiste en disparar nuestro arco para abatir a los enemigos de cada área, bien sea con el stick de un mando o con gesto de nuestros dedos. Sin embargo, tras superar cada zona de nuestro viaje seremos recompensados con alguna mejora de nuestras habilidades. Podremos concentrarnos disminuyendo la velocidad del paso del tiempo para apuntar mejor, un tiempo bala, aumentar nuestra resistencia ante los ataques enemigos, más corazones de vida, o, en última instancia, aprender a recoger las flechas enemigas cuando hayamos perdido todas las nuestras. Todas ellas introducidas con cuidado y muy poco a poco entre enemigos que suponen también alguna pequeña variación sobre el esquema original. Tímidamente los demonios que nos acechan a cada paso comenzarán a moverse, a disparar varios proyectiles, algunos presentarán una única zona en la que es posible dañarlos mientras que otros podrán regenerarse. Incluso los escenarios muestran cambios sobre la vista y los gráficos, o el área que tendremos que cubrir y los ejes sobre los que controlamos el movimiento. Esos leves cambios no desaparecen ni tan siquiera ante una segunda revisión —el título dispone de su propio sistema de logros y al obtenerlos se desbloquean arcos nuevos con habilidades extra—.
Visual y sonoramente A Ride into the Mountains es un videojuego que podría haberse realizado mucho tiempo atrás. Los samples de sonido son repetitivos, algo escasos. Muestra gráficos en baja resolución repletos de píxeles y es bastante parco a la hora de mostrar animaciones, al menos, más allá del movimiento del caballo y el disparo del arco de Zu. Y los enemigos no gozan prácticamente de detalle más allá de su forma. No obstante, pese a sus carencias, el cuadro global que compone cada momento del juego continúa siendo hermoso, y lo es más por la armonía de muchos de sus escenarios que por el detalle de los mismos.
Nadie que haya jugado a un par de videojuegos sentirá vértigos ante la curva de dificultad, ni se quedará abrumado por la cambiante mecánica, tampoco quedará marcado ante los paisajes que muestra como si estuviese embarcado en un viaje espiritual por el desierto. Pero, con un poco de suerte, y si sois amigos de los videojuegos arcade, olvidaréis los píxeles o los samples que lo componen y sencillamente disfrutaréis del viaje abatiendo a los enemigos sin caer en el tedio al que otros juegos nos fuerzan.
