El reciente estreno de Terminator: Génesis está lejos de repetir la influencia y la expectación producida por la segunda entrega de la saga protagonizada por Arnold Schwarzenegger. La primera película tuvo una acogida nada despreciable por parte de crítica y público, pero fue Terminator 2: El juicio final la película que realmente revolucionó el género de acción y que fue todo un acontecimiento en aquel 1991. James Cameron nos trajo una película que había roto todos los récords de presupuesto —algo que volvería a hacer con Titanic y Avatar—, pero el dinero fue bien empleado en unos efectos especiales que dejaban con boca la abierta al espectador con trucos poco habituales hasta la fecha de estreno.
El evidente éxito de taquilla trajo consigo, aparte de una verdadera sobreexplotación de la temática en el cine de acción contemporáneo, toda una avalancha de videojuegos en cuanta plataforma existía por aquel entonces. Con mi habitual espíritu masoquista, os traigo el que para mí es el peor juego de toda esa masa de títulos, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, un juego que apareció a la venta para PC, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 y ZX Spectrum.
Los responsables del crimen desde el lado de la distribución fueron los chicos de Ocean Software, verdaderos especialistas a la hora de hacerse con licencias cinematográficas a finales de los 80 y principios de los 90, pero cuya vara de medir en cuanto a calidad no era tan excelente a sabiendas de los buenos dividendos que iban a sacar. El desarrollo fue llevado a cabo por LJN, y fue parcialmente basado en un desarrollo anterior a manos de la misma compañía.
Irónicamente, y aunque la opinión popular es que éste fue el peor videojuego basado en Terminator 2, lo cierto es que es el que sigue de una forma más fiel el argumento del film gracias a que cada nivel representa una escena en concreto de la película. La primera fase representa el primer encuentro entre el T-800 —el robot encarnado por Schwarzenegger— y el T-1000 en el centro comercial: ambos contendientes se nos presentan en un escenario fijo como si de un juego de lucha se tratase y, tras un periodo inicial de disparos con arma de fuego, los dos robots se lían a tortas hasta que uno de los dos cae. La idea en sí no es mala, pero el desarrollo es horrible. Para sobrevivir a los disparos bastará con agacharse continuamente y a la hora de usar nuestros puños simplemente con aporrear infinitamente el botón lograremos terminar la fase, sin que se tenga que realizar ninguna técnica, ni importe la habilidad empleada.
El segundo nivel quizá sea el más destacable, en él que se representa la persecución por los túneles y puentes entre el camión y la moto conducida por el T-800. Pero a fin de cuentas no deja de ser el típico juego de conducción de motos con vista cenital evitando obstáculos que, a pesar del avance gráfico no deja de ser el mismo concepto que Motorace USA. Igualmente, es un nivel bastante sencillo y en poco tiempo nos haremos con la pericia suficiente, no solo para terminar el nivel sino también para recoger objetos suficientes como para recuperar la vida consumida del nivel anterior.
El tercer nivel es un juego de puzle en el que tenemos que reparar la mano del T-800. Un enigma bastante simple que es posible resolver sin demasiado esfuerzo, a base de ensayo y error, en pocos segundos. El cuarto nivel es calcado al primero, ya que es el segundo encuentro entre el T-800 y el T-1000, aunque en esta ocasión es en el hospital psiquiátrico donde se encuentra Sarah Connor. Ni siquiera el nuevo escenario permite distinguirlos fácilmente.
El quinto nivel, vuelve a ser un puzle, aunque en esta ocasión hay que arreglar el ojo del T-800. Un desafío algo más complejo que el anterior pero igualmente superable. La sexta fase es la más arcade de todas ellas, en ella dispondremos de varias pantallas fijas idénticas donde eliminar a todos los enemigos con una metralleta enorme que simplemente lanza bolas. Un nivel que ya en 1991 y, sobre todo en las versiones de 16 bits, daba bastante vergüenza.
El séptimo nivel es de nuevo de conducción, aunque en esta ocasión manejando la ambulancia, teniendo que evitar por un lado el colisionar con otros vehículos y, por otro, evitar los envites del helicoptero que nos persigue. Un reto algo más complejo pero con poco más que ofrecer. El último nivel representa el enfrentamiento final entre el T-800 y el T-100 en la fundición, con algo más de complejidad que el primero y el cuarto, pero con la misma mecánica.
En resumen, en diez minutos y con algo de pericia ya podríamos haber acabado el juego para quedarnos con cara de tontos. Al menos eso es lo que me pasó a mí cuando lo probé en su día. Lo cierto que era un videojuego bastante mediocre pero muy bien maquillado, resultaba muy vistoso para las fotografías de las revistas especializadas. Su aspecto gráfico era bastante agradable y, en el caso de las versiones de 16 bits, contaba con escenas de vídeo de la película, algo de bastante mérito en términos de compresión para que el juego cupiese en un único disquette. Las versiones de 8 bits sustituían dichos vídeos por imágenes fijas pero también con un acabado bastante bueno. De hecho, desde la perspectiva de los microordenadores de 8 bits el videojuego no era tan malo, sobre todo si hubiese sido lanzado cinco años antes. En el caso de los 16 bits, palidecía con cualquier otro juego de acción de la época.
En general no había por donde cogerlo, pero el aspecto gráfico y la vorágine asociada a la película fue suficiente para que incluso se llevara buenas notas por la prensa especializada a pesar de que en lo que respecta al público, el juego no aguantara más de cinco o seis partidas. De hecho, este título tiene una calidad tan baja, que hace más que aceptables las otras obras lanzadas a raíz de la película, a pesar de que tampoco fuesen una maravilla. Sin duda, se trata de un caso de hype excesivo mucho antes de que ni siquiera se convirtiese en una palabra de uso común en el mundillo de los videojuegos.
