Cualquier persona sensata a la que le guste los videojuegos ya debería tener unos gustos asentados, y ser lo suficientemente madura como para poder ignorar los vaivenes empresariales de turno, y así cabalgar la ola oportuna en cada momento.
Por desgracia, algunos no somos así de maduros. O no nos da la gana serlo. Y los segueros de verdad, esa gente que gozó desde mitad de los 80 a principios de los 2000 de una pléyade de juegos magníficos, con un estilo, una forma, una estética y unos mundos más o menos coherentes, no somos tan fáciles de contentar con lo que, hoy en día, nos da la industria del videojuego. Algo que no quita que, desde un punto de vista objetivo, podamos pensar que ahora el videojuego está mejor que nunca. Es como si, de repente, a los que han sido del Madrid, del Barça, del Valencia o del Atleti, por poner un ejemplo, tras quince años de religioso seguimiento, le dicen que no, que ya no pueden apoyar a su equipo, que o se ponen a apoyar al de al lado, o que se dejen de seguir el fútbol. Así que digamos que “es complicado”.
Pero hay una cosa que mucha gente, que os burláis –con algo de razón– de los segueros no sabéis: SEGA no está muerta. Es más, es una de las empresas más potentes en videojuegos a día de hoy. Si, no hace consolas. Pero eso no quita que sea un pequeño emporio en este negocio. Vamos a echar un ojo dentro de la empresa de Haneda.
Lo primero es que Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. incluye en la actualidad a un conglomerado formado por entre 50 y 100 empresas, según como se cuente. Un grupo con empresas de dardos, de videojuegos, de juguetes, de animación, de sonido, de eventos, o incluso de de pachinkos. Respecto a lo que nos interesa, Sega es la dueña de algunas de las empresas con mejor reputación, actualmente, de videojuegos del mundo. Atlus, Sports Interactive, Creative Assembly, Three Rings o Relic son parte de Sega, mientras que empresas como Sanrio (Hello Kitty) o Dimps (el último Dragon Ball) están fuertemente participadas por SEGA.
¿Y juegos propios? Pues ahí está la saga Yakuza partiendo la pana –en Japón– entrega tras entrega, cada vez con mayor presupuesto, mejor nota –aunque ya no puede sacar más del 10–, y mayor repercusión a nivel social. Otro juego que está funcionando muy bien es Hero Bank, de nuevo, en el país del sol naciente. La saga Hatsune Miku ha conseguido salir del videojuego para afectar a toda la sociedad, y el mundo está esperando con ganas Shining Resonance. A todo esto hay que añadirle el reciente Alien Isolation, y las sagas Total War, Football Manager, todos los Persona y los Shin Megami Tensei, junto a otros títulos de Atlus, lo bien que están funcionando títulos de móvil como Puyo Puyo Tetris o la sorpresa que resultó ser Sonic : All Stars Racing Transformed –tal vez “el mejor Mario Kart” de la historia–.
Con todo, hay un pequeño problema. Ahí tenemos a Alex Kidd, que lleva desde 1989 sin aparecer, por si mismo, en nuestras pantallas. Fue nacer Sonic, y SEGA lo apartó de nuestras pantallas. Esto tendría sentido si, como con Pengo, por poner un ejemplo, SEGA lo dejase en paz. Pero no, Alex Kidd vende. Especialmente en Europa. SEGA lo sabe, y no deja de resucitarlo poco a poco. No en vano aparece en en Sonic All Stars Racing, en Segaga, en camisetas, en todo tipo de subproductos. Pero eso de resucitarlo en condiciones parece que no va con ellos. Y quien dice el pobre Alex Kidd dice todos los grandes nombres que le rodeaban por aquel entonces. Joe Musashi, Opa Opa, los guerreros de Golden Axe, Altered Beast, o Wonder Boy. La mayoría han aparecido en otros títulos, pero nada de tomárselos en serio. Si hasta Sonic ha perdido a su padre dentro de la empresa, y cada entrega nueva provoca una mezcla de miedo e ilusión a los jugadores de toda la vida.
Esto es debido a que SEGA, como cualquier empresa, sólo tiene un objetivo: Ganar dinero. Pero más allá de eso, les falta una coherencia que si que ha tenido Nintendo desde que ambas eran grandes rivales. Os daré un dato: En 1989 había más juegos canónicos de Alex Kidd que de Mario. Comparad ahora. Y también un ejemplo: Nintendo quiso resucitar a Kid Icarus, y además de meterlo en Smash Bros, lanzó un remake de la primera entrega, volvió a sacar la segunda, le hizo una serie de capítulos de animación gratis para 3DS, y finalmente lanzó un juego «triple A».
Cuando Cervantes no quiso que gente como Avellaneda cayese bajo la tentación de hacer más entregas del Quijote, lo que hizo fue, literalmente, matarlo. Esta claro que SEGA y Cervantes tienen motivaciones distintas, pero la primera debería saber de la responsabilidad que hay bajo sus hombros a la hora de gestionar una propiedad intelectual, algo que si hizo el segundo, aunque en aquellos tiempos ni existiese esa denominación.
Personalmente, me gustaría que SEGA supiese a donde va. Que tuviese claro si hará algo con Shenmue algún día, o si decidirá traer a occidente cosas como Yakuza 5 o Shining Resonance, o que como poco que comenzará a respetar su legado. Que entendiese que en Europa tienen mejor imagen que la de una empresa que hace juegos en Unity3D para móvil con modelo de pago de anuncios por vídeo. O si por el contrario va a pasar de todo esto y seguirá picando de todo un poco, actuando de una manera que a veces parece obedecer más a la aletoriedad que a la lógica. Sega, quo vadis?

Sega tiene un fregao que no somos capaces de vislumbrar asi como asi xD
Yo lo que sacó en conclusión del artículo son los deseos de que SEGA vuelva a sacar juegos japoneses fuera de territorio nipón y además retome las sagas que posee como Wonder Boy, Alex Kidd o Shenmue con los estándar actuales del desarrollo de videojuegos.
Al acabar he pensado que esto sería tan maravilloso que hasta duele que no vaya a pasar. Pero luego me acuerdo de lo que han vendido juegos cojonudos como Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza, Resonance of Fate o Binary Domain y que es normal que ya no saquen juegos así, triste pero normal.
Pues que voy a decir, me encantaría que SEGA volviese a sacar a la luz sagas y personajes que se adaptarían perfectamente a la actualidad, por ejemplo en forma de RPG como Wonder Boy o Golden Axe (recordando los míticos Ax Battler o GA Warrior). Pero como dices en el artículo, salvo Yakuza y S&SASRT, la SEGA actual es más editora que productora de juegos. Ojalá llegara alguien con ideas (guiño, guiño) y SEGA les dejara sacar del ostracismo a alguna de sus sagas.
