México 86
Nuestra primera parada la haremos en tierras mexicanas por un motivo muy sencillo: fue la primera vez que la FIFA concedió una licencia oficial de su torneo más importante para un videojuego. Se trataba de World Cup Carnival, un videojuego de Arctic Games que data en realidad de 1984, pero que fue relanzado para coincidir con la edición de la Copa del Mundo de 1986. De hecho, ni siquiera el origen de cada versión es la misma, de modo que dependiendo de la plataforma el juego es de una manera u otra: la más aceptable es la de Commodore 64, de U.S. Gold. La versión de ZX Spectrum era una renovación de World Cup, mientras que las de Commodore 64 y Amstrad CPC eran World Cup II.
Pero no tener licencia no es razón para no aprovechar el tirón de un evento de estas características. En los salones recreativos irrumpió en 1985 Tehkan World Cup, uno de los grandes clásicos del fútbol arcade, que ya no es que no estuviera licenciado, es que ni los equipos tenían nombre: eran el Red Team, el Blue Team, etcétera… Por su parte, MacMillan sacó para ordenadores de 8 bits un extraño juego que mezclaba elementos de trivial y de gestión bajo el título de World Cup Soccer, que pasó más bien desapercibido.
Italia 90
Sin duda, la edición que se celebró en Italia fue la más prolífica en producción. En una época en la que no tener licencia no implicaba muchas trabas legales para lanzar un videojuego, se produjo una gran cantidad de juegos desde diversas partes del mundo. De hecho, en realidad la FIFA no apoyó oficialmente ninguna versión y siempre se han considerado las más “oficiales” las distribuidas por U.S. Gold. En concreto, las ediciones especiales de World Class Soccer para PC, CPC, Spectrum, Atari ST y Amiga, que se relanzaron bajo el nombre de Italy 90 para aprovechar el campeonato. El juego empleaba la perspectiva cenital con desplazamiento vertical, que se volvió muy popular los años siguientes en los títulos de fútbol, y la verdad es que tenía calidad suficiente y funcionó muy bien.
En paralelo a este lanzamiento, Codemasters lanzó Italia 90 para Amiga y Atari ST, un videojuego horrendo más digno de los 8 bits que de estos potentes ordenadores. Por su parte, SEGA relanzó también bajo el título de World Cup Italia 90 su World Championship Soccer en todo tipo de plataformas, un videojuego por todos conocido gracias a que vino en un pack de regalo en la promoción de lanzamiento de Mega Drive en Europa, y que resultó muy popular por su adictiva jugabilidad arcade. Los refritos no se quedan ahí, ya que Virgin también hizo lo propio con Rick Davis’ World Trophy Soccer y lo lanzó como World Cup Soccer: Italia 90, un título de fútbol muy curioso: la perspectiva de la acción variaba según la zona del campo donde se desarrollaba. Por su lado, Nintendo aprovechó el evento para promocionar su adaptador para cuatro jugadores con Nintendo World Cup, que fue, por cierto, un juego que llegó a comercializarse en la versión asiática de Mega Drive.
Y continuamos para bingo. Simulmondo se adelantó bastante a los acontecimientos con el lanzamiento de Italy ’90 Soccer (1988) para Amiga y Commodore 64 que, aunque se trataba de un videojuego algo desfasado, y más según se acercaba el campeonato, permitía realizar un torneo con hasta ocho jugadores distintos. Genias también aprovechó el tirón con World Cup 90 para Amiga y Commodore 64. Y ni siquiera la Edad de Oro del Soft Español se libra de este torrente de videojuegos: una Opera Soft ya en plena decadencia lanzó Mundial de Fútbol, un título que era más un halo de esperanza que otra cosa, un videojuego desfasado para máquinas desfasadas y que, además, se lanzó después de celebrarse el mundial. Más que recuperar a la compañía, le dio la puntilla.
Estados Unidos de América (USA) 94
Las licencias volvían a la palestra y, en esta ocasión, fue U.S. Gold quien se llevó el premio gordo con World Cup USA 94, que seguía el mismo concepto de su creación para el anterior campeonato y le daba un lavado de cara acorde con los tiempos que corrían. De esta manera, quedó un videojuego bastante resultón que en muchos aspectos recordaba a Sensible Soccer, pero con un ritmo de juego bastante menos dinámico.
De la norma oficial se salió primeramente Tengen, que en 1993 lanzó exclusivamente para Game Gear el juego World Cup Soccer, uno de los pocos títulos futbolísticos que vio la portátil de SEGA. GameTek también entró en la puja y renombró su Elite Soccer como World Cup Striker en diversos países.
De nuevo, el software español entró a la palestra con USA Soccer 94, un videojuego desarrollado por la emergente Digital Dreams Multimedia. Esta compañía pretendía seguir la estela de Dinamic Multimedia de la venta en kioskos, pero realizando los desarrollos en mucho menos tiempo, lo que fue lastrando la calidad de todo su catálogo. El videojuego fue una adaptación al torneo de su PC Gol, con el que presentó batalla a PC Fútbol. Si las ediciones de PC Liga no eran ya muy buenas, imaginaos como era este, un festival de bugs bastante injugable.
Francia 98
En la edición de 1998 se produjo un punto de inflexión: la todopoderosa EA Sports se hizo con los derechos de la FIFA y ya no los volvió a soltar. Esto casi ha monopolizado el evento en manos de EA, pero también ha dado una continuidad y garantía de calidad a los videojuegos a él asociados, versiones modificadas de la saga FIFA. Para esta primera ocasión, EA lo celebró por todo lo alto y la entrega de FIFA de ese año fue renombrada como FIFA 98 Road to World Cup, una versión que se centraba en la fase de clasificación para el torneo. Ya de forma independiente salió World Cup 98, que contaba con las licencias de los jugadores participantes, así como con representaciones en 3D de los distintos estadios del campeonato.
Por su parte, THQ realizó una versión para Game Boy y, como curiosidad, Hasbro Interactive lanzó Monopoly: World Cup France 98 Edition para PC. España, para variar, iba a su bola con el tema de licencias y demás y Dinamic Multimedia sacó la correspondiente versión de PC Selección Española Mundial ’98, en la que se podía elegir para el conjunto español cualquier jugador de la liga y que se basaba en PC Fútbol 6.0.
Corea del Sur y Japón 2002
Con el monopolio de EA Sports bien consolidado, se lanzó 2002 FIFA World Cup, conocido por todos los aficionados de los videojuegos como el año de los “tiros de fuego”. EA apostó aquel año por un concepto mucho más arcade, si cabe, que el de la edición de FIFA de ese año. El resultado fue un FIFA para amateurs, donde marcar un gol era extremadamente fácil y dejar pulsado el botón de disparo no penalizaba en el resultado del tiro.
Alemania 2006
Nueva edición de EA con FIFA World Cup: Germany 2006, en un momento en el que la saga FIFA estaba perdiendo la batalla con Pro Evolution Soccer. Evidentemente, el juego heredaba todas las virtudes y defectos de la edición de FIFA, pero respecto a otros juegos sobre el mundial suponía una mejora. El principal interés se encontraba en que se podía elegir entre 127 selecciones nacionales distintas y jugar toda la clasificación, lo que alargó mucho la vida del juego al no limitarse al campeonato en sí.
Sudáfrica 2010
El año de la consagración de la selección española podemos decir que fue el regreso por la puerta grande de EA Sports. Con el salto de generación, FIFA había recuperado el camino perdido con Pro Evolution Soccer —y de paso se había adelantado bastante— lo que tuvo su repercusión en 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa: nos encontramos con un juego bastante más digno que el anterior. De nuevo puede escogerse cualquier selección para la clasificación y, además, se añadió el modo “Capitanea tu selección”, que era una adaptación del modo “Be a Pro“, lo que aún aumentaba más la vida del juego.
Brasil 2014
A pesar de que la última edición de la Eurocopa tuvo un DLC en vez de un juego independiente, 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil es de nuevo un título completo. No ha quedado libre de cierta polémica: tan solo se ha desarrollado para XBox 360 y PlayStation 3, dejando de lado a la next-gen y al PC. La razón esgrimida es la falta de impacto en el mercado mundial de las nuevas consolas, por lo que no salía rentable el desarrollo, lo que por otro lado no justifica el feo al PC. El juego en sí sigue una línea continuista respecto a la edición anterior, con las clasificaciones completas, el modo de capitaneo de la selección y diversos modos compatibles con el EA Sports Football Club.

Por último, cabe destacar Viva Football, título del que ya he hablado en una ocasión anterior y que se lanzó un año después del Campeonato del Mundo de Francia 98. Este videojuego desarrollado por Crimsom para Virgin Play permitía jugar a todos los campeonatos que se habían desarrollado hasta ese momento, incluyendo la ronda de clasificación de los últimos. Aunque jugablemente tenía diversas deficiencias, resultó un experimento muy interesante que sería gustoso que repitieran cada equis ediciones.
Yo el Italia 90 de mega lo tenía en caja en solitario, ni multijuegos ni leches XD. Aún me acuerdo de las músicas… ^_^
