Por ello, el aparato es capaz de combinar las funcionalidades de una televisión, un grabador/programador con su propio disco duro y la versatilidad de tener a nuestra disposición un entorno controlado en el que poder ejecutar aplicaciones de propósito general, es decir, Windows 8.
Mucha gente, yo el primero, encontró… “poco útil” el ser capaces de estar viendo la televisión y pasar en un instante a realizar cualquier otra tarea, pudiendo incluso realizar ambas a la vez. Si bien tomamos en cuenta únicamente el ámbito videojueguil, seguramente solo encontremos interesante esta opción para estar usando Skype a la vez que estemos en una partida, o para usar el lateral de la pantalla para revisar la guía de turno. Y, sí, seguramente cueste encontrar más utilidades a estas opciones si solo tomamos en cuenta el ámbito jugón.
Microsoft también nos enseñó la perfecta funcionalidad que existirá desde el primer día entre la Xbox One y nuestros dispositivos móviles, ya sean tabletas Android, teléfonos con iOS, o una combinación de los dos anteriores. Podremos manejar la consola con ellos, obtener funcionalidades especiales mediante su uso, etc. Una funcionalidad que, de nuevo, ya existe en Xbox 360 y que, en cuestión de videojuegos, pocos han encontrado utilidad. La compatibilidad de Halo 4 con SmartGlass fue anecdótica, y pocos encuentran el sentido a navegar por internet usando el móvil cuando el mismo dispositivo es capaz de hacerlo de manera nativa. De nuevo, nos encontramos con funcionalidades difícilmente necesarias en el ámbito videojueguil.
De la opción de ver la televisión en nuestra consola, tan solo podemos sacar dos conclusiones. La primera es que, seguramente, solamente podamos ver TV a través de internet (tal y como hace ahora mismo Xbox 360), a no ser que compremos un accesorio independiente que nos permita sintonizar la televisión normal, tal y como ya hizo en el pasado Sony con su PlayStation 3 sin demasiado éxito. La segunda conclusión es que Xbox One parece diseñada por Xzibit.
Por otro lado, si bien es cierto que las pantallas de alta definición llevan ya una buena temporada con nosotros, no se puede decir que haya sido una tecnología que haya calado hondo en absolutamente toda la población. En primer lugar, nos encontramos el problema del precio de estos dispositivos: no todo el mundo se puede permitir gastarse el dinero que cuesta una pantalla plana en estos tiempos que corren. Y, sobre todo, en segundo lugar está la alta mutabilidad de estas tecnologías, que provoca que quienes comprasen una televisión hace unos años se encuentren totalmente aislados de las últimas novedades. Seguramente, quien disfrute de su TFT desde hace más de cinco años haya aprendido, a las malas, lo que significa no tener un receptor TDT de alta definición, no disponer de los suficientes puertos HDMI (¡o incluso HDMI sin HDCP!), o se haya sorprendido con las novedades de las llamadas smart TV’s, televisiones con un mínimo de potencia computacional capaces de conectarse a internet para ver YouTube, dejarnos jugar a Angry Birds en sus más de cuarenta pulgadas o incluso permitir funcionalidades avanzadas gracias a un dispositivo que detecta nuestros cuerpos y gestos.
Creo que a estas alturas resulta obvio a dónde quiero llegar con todo esto. A fin de cuentas, este mismo artículo de opinión se titula la smart TV de Microsoft. Y es que, si dejamos de fijarnos únicamente en el entorno de los videojuegos, por difícil que resulte, nos percataremos de una estrategia curiosa: ¿qué es Xbox One, sino una manera de convertir en una smart TV cualquier tipo de televisión?
Si comparamos Xbox One con la televisión inteligente promedio encontraremos jugosas ventajas como la no necesidad de cambiar nuestro televisor actual (si bien esta ventaja puede desaparecer rápidamente dependiendo de la evolución del precio de ambos aparatos), ofrecernos una capacidad computacional que iría mucho más allá de lo habitual en este tipo de dispositivos, compatibilidad automática con todo tipo de aplicaciones desarrolladas para Windows 8 y puestas a la venta en su marketplace, una plataforma online en la que poder alquilar y comprar contenido digital bajo demanda tales como películas, series o música, y todo sin dejar de lado el hecho de que seremos capaces de jugar a Angry Birds con nuestro propio cuerpo, a la vez de ser capaces de ejecutar juegos de la categoría de Forza Motorsport o Call of Duty. ¿No resultaría ciertamente deseable para el cliente medio el disponer de absolutamente todas estas ventajas sin necesidad de dejar de lado su actual televisor? A fin de cuentas, ¡Xbox One tampoco parece ser mucho más complicado que su actual decodificador de televisión o aquellos vídeos VHS que usaba hace años para ver películas!
