Flashback es uno de esos juegos que se las apañan para coger lo mejor de un montón de grandes y ideas y hacer real la frase que afirma que, en ocasiones, el total es mayor a la suma de las partes.
La herencia más evidente, es Prince of Persia, aquel sensacional juego de Brøderbund, mucho más que de Another World, mil veces tomado por su precuela y mil veces erróneamente, pues no comparten nada aparte del uso de la rotoscopia para las animaciones.
Conrad, el protagonista de Flashback, es una clara evolución del príncipe que tenía una hora para encontrar a su princesa, y dicha evolución es palpable no sólo en controles y animación, sino en profundidad del juego e historia. Y es aquí donde llegamos a la parte más literaria del juego, pues el argumento corta tangencialmente la trama de clásicos como Desafío Total, basado a su vez en un relato de K. Dick, o Perseguido, éste de Stephen King. Pero la influencia más evidente es Están Vivos, el clásico necesario de John Carpenter, pues Conrad, al igual que el protagonista de la película tiene unas gafas que le permiten descubrir que hay una raza de alienígenas infiltrados entre nosotros. Dichos alienígenas capturan a nuestro protagonista, le borran la memoria y lo abandonan en la jungla de un remoto planeta.
Es en este punto donde el jugador entra en escena de esta videoaventura, término perdido y que me empeño en recuperar, perdido y sin saber siquiera quien es. Poco tardamos en encontrar un holocubo, un dispositivo de grabación, en el que aparece el propio Conrad dándose instrucciones a si mismo para recuperar la memoria. Si en este punto no estáis pensando en Schwarzenegger, corred a ver la vieja Desafío Total y no volváis hasta haberlo hecho. A partir de este punto del juego y hasta la mitad del mismo, la espiral de referencias es considerable, pues Conrad descubrirá la verdad sobre su pasado con la ayuda de un amigo que le reimplanta su memoria y deberá participar en un letal reality televisado llamado Death Tower para ganar el dinero necesario para volver a la tierra, desde la cual irá al planeta natal de los alienígenas para acabar con la amenaza.
Es evidente, por lo expuesto, que Flashback es rico en historia y detalle argumental, pero es que también se juega de maravilla. Su control, preciso al milímetro, permite hacer carreras, saltos y combates con toda seguridad. Incluso se permite incorporar la idea del muro de energía para defenderse de los disparos enemigos que hubiera en Another World. Si es cierto que hay cosas, como el salto en carrera, que cuesta aprender a usar, pero no por lo complicado, sino por lo diferente a lo visto hasta entonces: para agarrar a un saliente superior mientras corremos no hay que pulsar arriba, pues el juego lo hace automáticamente mientras tengamos presionado el botón de correr.
Pero pudiera parecer que Flashback se limita a tomar prestado para construir un gran juego y no es así: esa recolección, simplemente, ayuda a la grandeza de un título por derecho propio. La creación de puzles usando un dispositivo de teletransporte que podemos arrojar, la variedad de situaciones que incluyen puzles de puertas o carreras contra el tiempo, y el diseño magistral de fases o el obligar al jugador a enfrentarse a una situación burocrática, mareándolo de ventanilla en ventanilla, suponen una base fuerte y robusta para un juego imprescindible, un título que ha envejecido increiblemente bien, con unos gráficos 2D perfectamente disfrutables y un control que aguanta las inclemencias del tiempo. De hecho, posiblemente se podría distribuir Flashback en las plataformas digitales y pasaría por una novedad más con amor a las dos dimensiones, triunfando como lo hizo hace ya más de veinte años.
Bien sea un reencuentro, bien un primer contacto, Flashback es una experiencia deliciosa con un mando en la mano: su historia interesante, su jugabilidad y sus valores artísticos hacen que se confirme como un ejemplo de retro del bueno, más allá de nostalgias caducas y de recuerdos empañados. Jueguen Flashback como si fuera 1992, maldita sea.
No se si ha sido cosa de las acertadas referencias, o de los recuerdos que arrastro desde mi niñez, pero tu artículo me ha tocado el corazoncito. Me apetece darle un poquito de hamor.
¿Por cierto, que opinión te merece el remake en 3D?
Lo jugué en 2011 y lo disfruté como si hubiera acabado de salir. Un juego atemporal, con un apartado gráfico que no necesitaba una revisión 3D, aunque, para mi gusto, un control muy duro.
Creo que la palabra Obra Maestra es la que mejor lo define.
El remake me pinta muy buen, la verdad, y le tengo muchas ganas, porque lo poco visto apunta maneras.
Flashback lo jugué varias veces en PC y para este texto lo he rejugado en Megadrive, que compré el cartucho hace unos meses, y es junto a la de PC, versión de referencia para mí.
Con flashback aún entiendo el 3D, pero ay si me lo llegan a hacer así con Another World….
Yo le dí hamor en PC y en alguna consola, pero no estoy seguro si en Mega o el SNES xD. Yo lo del 3D a pelo lo veo mal xD, habría preferido un aspecto más cartoon.. si quieren tirar de tres dimensiones por narices un cel shading me habría gustado más xD.
Yo lo jugué en el Amiga, y no tengo buen recuerdo de su control. Pero creo recordar que por entonces aún usaba los joysticks del Atari, así que probablemente no era culpa del juego 😛
