Yo venía a hablar de DayZ. Tenía pensado escribir un poco contando su historia, tocar un poco por encima el siempre jugoso tema de los mods y alabar el trabajo de sus autores en un texto lleno de referencias a lo zombi. Pero no va a ser así. Y no va a ser así porque, en el momento de escribir estas líneas, estoy bajo los efectos de un ataque de ansiedad provocado por el propio juego.
Todo ha venido por una incursión a una ciudad con el fin de conseguir víveres, pues estaba hambriento y necesitaba comida. Decidí acercarme, desde el este, con el abrigo de una colina, para poder otear el terreno y localizar a todos los podridos posibles y así trazar mi ruta hacia las zonas donde pudiera haber alimentos. Todo iba bien. Me arrastré entre los edificios, esquivando muertos vivientes, hasta un supermercado. Desde la esquina pude ver que había comida y me decidí a cruzar la calle. Y en ese punto es donde todo se fue a la mierda.
En cuanto sonó el primer disparo supe que había sido un imbécil: había caído en una emboscada. Alguien estaba cazando supervivientes y yo era la presa. Por si fuera poco, todos los zombis de la zona despertaron de sus letárgicos paseos y empezaron a correr en dirección a algún punto situado a mi espalda, de donde seguramente provino el disparo y, obviamente, yo estaba en el camino de varios de ellos. Así pues, lo que se había convertido en una expedición en busca de comida se había vuelto una práctica de tiro por parte de algún desgraciado unida a la amenaza de una docena de muertos vivientes.
Sobra decir que corrí como alma que lleva el diablo fuera de la ciudad, en dirección norte, en busca del refugio de la maleza. Tras esquivar a mis perseguidores y vendar mis heridas, pude ver, gracias a los prismáticos que había encontrado días atrás, a un bastardo subido en una de las torres de la iglesia, rifle en mano, buscando supervivientes a los que cazar y presumo que saquear. ¿Por qué lo hizo? ¿Por qué atacó a otro jugador? Por lo mismo que un perro se lame las pelotas: porque puede.
Y es que eso es DayZ. Que no les engañen: no es un juego de zombis. Es un juego con zombis.
Esa diferencia es vital y su columna vertebral: se trata de supervivencia en el entorno más hostil posible, porque no solo están los muertos vivientes. Los peores enemigos son el hambre, la sed, el frío, las enfermedades y, por encima de todo, otros jugadores. Sí, se puede jugar solo, en un servidor privado o vacío, pero la experiencia no es la misma ni por aproximación, pues DayZ es un juego online sobre la soledad. Esa soledad que raya en desesperación al sentirnos perdidos en medio de la nada, de noche, sin mapa ni brújula, y oyendo los gemidos de los no muertos. Esa soledad que provoca angustia al ver como empezamos a morir de hambre y la única fuente de comida está protegida por más caminantes de los que nos podemos enfrentar, porque, ¡ay!, olvidémonos de sacar un arma y abrirnos paso a tiro limpio. Los zombis se guían por el oído y la vista y un disparo es la señal que marca la hora del almuerzo. Eso, por no hablar de lo que tardaremos en encontrar un arma… Pasamos horas arrastrándonos, en busca de un lugar que no haya sido saqueado y rezando porque ese no muerto no nos vea al pasar por delante. Y, sobre todo, por no caer emboscados por bandidos.
En realidad, DayZ es la sinergia de la hostilidad, un estudio sociológico sobre el comportamiento humano y cómo el libre albedrío afecta al comportamiento del individuo. Aquí vuelve a pasar lo que ya ocurrió con las primeras versiones de Ultima Online o la ya famosa epidemia en World of Warcaft: el ser humano, tribal por naturaleza, usa todos los medios a su alcance cuando se ve en un entorno asesino para sobrevivir a costa del resto. Todo es una carrera contra la muerte en la que los obstáculos son seres humanos. Como toda buena historia de zombis que se precie, vaya. Consulten los clásicos y así quedará demostrado: lo zombi no trata sobre el apocalipsis o sobre el fin de los días. Trata sobre la fragmentación de la humanidad, de su autocondena a la segregación y posterior extinción. Trata sobre cómo no hay peor criatura que el hombre, pues el muerto viviente actúa por puro instinto y sin maldad. Y esa, y no otra, es la esencia de DayZ.
No teman a los muertos, pues el verdadero enemigo está vivo.
