En nuestro tradicional viaje en el tiempo de los miércoles vamos a realizar una parada en 1990 para revisar un videojuego de la conocida compañía nipona SNK. Es oír el nombre de dicha empresa y seguramente se os vendrá a la cabeza la consola Neo Geo y multitud de juegos de acción. Sin embargo, vamos a acercarnos a un título que se aleja de este concepto, ya que nos encontramos con un videojuego para NES que podemos enmarcar dentro de los Action-RPG al más puro estilo The Legend of Zelda. Estamos hablando de Crystalis.
El origen de esta historia nos emplaza al 1 de Octubre de 1997, donde una gran guerra termonuclear llega a su punto álgido y casi acaba con todo rastro de la humanidad, siendo conocido por todos como el Día Final. Desde ese momento la vida nunca volverá a ser la misma ya que criaturas mutantes se harían con el control de la Tierra. Los pocos supervivientes que quedaron decidieron construir una enorme “Torre en el cielo” para poder contrarrestar los ataques de los mutantes y evitar errores pasados. Tras casi cien años desde aquel fatídico día y con una Tierra muy distinta, llevada a un atraso casi medieval sin rastro de ciencia, el Emperador Draygon decide combinar la ciencia con la magia para hacerse con el poder y hacer un uso maléfico de la Torre. La maldad vuelve a apoderarse de la Tierra y la única esperanza son unos científicos que han estado bajo criogenización durante todo este tiempo. ¿Podrán devolver la paz a la Tierra? Se han despertado sin ápice de memoria, así que tendrán que empezar a recordar para conseguir acabar con Draygon.
Crystalis se mueve bajo los estándares de los Action-RPG de la época, fuertemente influenciado por la saga de Zelda. De hecho, aún siendo un juego de ciencia-ficción, nos movemos en un entorno medieval. Nos encontramos con el típico sistema de experiencia que nos permite realizar mejoras en defensa, ataque y salud. También contamos con una serie de objetos, como armas y escudos, que podremos ir adquiriendo a lo largo de la aventura. Aunque nos encontraremos con algunos puzles que resolver, lo cierto es que el título está más encaminado al combate.
Nuestro arma principal es la espada, existen hasta cuatro tipos distintos cada uno referenciando a un elemento (tierra, aire, agua y fuego). Esta diferenciación será esencial, ya que ciertos enemigos serán inmunes a algunas espadas y podrán ser eliminados con otras. Cada espada podrá ser mejorada con power ups mágicos que permitirán hacer ataques a larga distancia. Pero las espadas no sólo servirán para atacar al enemigo, sino que también podrán darnos algunas ventajas ante ciertos obstáculos, por ejemplo, haciendo uso de la espada de fuego para atravesar bloques de hielo.
Crystalis es un juego que puede colmar las expectativas de un jugador del género ampliamente y es un indispensable si además se es fan de la NES, de hecho la popular revista americana Nintendo Power lo incluyó en su lista de los mejores 200 juegos para la consola. En su momento tuvo una gran acogida tanto de crítica como del público, algo que derivaría en un remake para Game Boy Color diez años más tarde. Destaca en su género por su dinamismo, gracias a su enfoque al combate que incluso puede llegar a atrapar a jugadores más adaptados a otra temática. Las pocas críticas que recibieron fueron hacia su mecánica repetitiva, aunque ¿qué Action-RPG no lo es?, y todos elogiaron su potente capacidad técnica.
De hecho, el acabado técnico es uno de los grandes pilares del juego y nos encontramos con ciertas mejoras respecto a otros juegos similares. Mantiene una perspectiva cenital, pero tenemos uno de los scrolls más suaves de los que se han visto en NES. Por otro lado, el control es extraordinariamente eficaz, aumentando hasta a ocho las direcciones en las que nuestro personaje se mueve con excepcional fluidez y velocidad. Los gráficos, aunque se encuentran dentro de los márgenes del género y la máquina, cuentan con un alto nivel de detalle y con personajes bien definidos. Y por lo demás, hay que destacar un excelente trabajo en el audio, con una banda sonora muy variada y una utilización de los efectos que saca todo el jugo posible de la NES (a la que no le quedaría mucho más tiempo de plenitud).
Si eres un fiel seguidor de la saga de The Legend of Zelda, deberías probar Crystalis, un título con interesantes inclusiones en su mecánica de juego y un acabado técnico excelente. O al menos probar la versión de Game Boy Color, vendida como un port, resultó ser una mejora del título en aspectos tanto técnicos como en mecánica de juego.
