Los avatares siguen siendo: el forzudo Simon, malhumorado pero bonachón; Defender, siempre dispuesto a ayudar al prójimo; y el “cerebro” del trío, Brain, aunque como buen mete patas endeble rara vez recibe esa consideración.
El nuevo punto de partida viene de un momento de gloria de Brain, cuando gana el cinturón de campeón en la liga del The Wrestler Zone casi por fortuna para acabar regocijándose en exceso ante el resto de luchadores. Da New Guys no eran el equipo más popular, ni dentro ni fuera de los vestuarios, así que cuando unas horas más tarde Brain es secuestrado la lista de sospechosos parece demasiado extensa. Con el afán incombustible de ayudar, Defender se embarca en una cruzada para rescatar a su amigo a través de los suburbios de la ciudad. Nuevamente el planteamiento de la historia y sus personajes podría pasar por un drama pero nada más lejos de la realidad. El argumento mantiene el tono humorístico y absurdo de la saga, casi “chanante“, con pequeños puzles correctamente enlazados en los sketches cómicos. Algunos de los momentos son verdaderamente inspirados y otros realmente dispersos, pero todos ellos tienen una relación directa con otros títulos anteriores, con películas y con series, que ya pertenecen a la cultura popular.
Day of the Jackass ha sido terminado mediante el mismo motor que la primera parte, el parser específico de aventuras gráficas AGS. Pese a pecar de una resolución algo baja sus gráficos gozan de una calidad visual mayor con respecto a su antecesor, fundamentalmente gracias a haber sido adaptados de los renders realizados para el corto de animación. En conjunto el acabado es aceptable, sin llegar al pixelart de otras obras, y de hecho las animaciones “casi fluidas” confieren a todos los personajes un aspecto aun más cómico y amigable. El autor mantiene el simplificado interfaz point&click típico en el género, con un solo botón para realizar todas las acciones y otro más para observar, pero en esta ocasión se molesta en crear puzles que requieren específicamente que algunos objetos del inventario o el escenario sean observados previamente para obtener información, e incluso nos permite combinar elementos del inventario de objetos. Tanto el interfaz específico del menú como el propio de la colección de objetos han sido filtrados para mejorar su aspecto manteniendo el diseño original. En definitiva un pulido necesario para acercarse a un estándar, aunque sea uno anticuado.
Al contrario que la primera parte Day of the Jackass es un título comercial y por tanto no encontraremos canciones de teleseries o grupos de música de moda en versión MIDI. Incorporar material con derechos restringidos a día de hoy es peligroso, y por ello, la música ha sido compuesta por Chris Moorson (un habitual de Wadjet Eye Games) que sin llegar a generar con su trabajo un recuerdo duradero logra ambientar correctamente en la mayoría de ocasiones.
La duración del título es ya de por si suficientemente extensa para tratarse de un videojuego comercial pero los creadores han tenido a bien incluir un curioso sistema de “logros”. El sistema emula a los ya existentes en muchas de las plataformas de juego populares, sin innovaciones pero si con acabado cuidado. Algunos de estos trofeos se obtienen sencillamente al avanzar durante la aventura pero otros constituyen un verdadero reto. Podría resultar un añadido completamente superfluo al tratarse de una aventura gráfica, una vez desarrollada toda la historia no debería quedar mucha zanahoria que ofrecer al burro, pero por fortuna existe toda una sección de extras desbloqueables: imágenes, bosquejos de diseño y personajes, además de comentarios sobre el diseño; elementos jugosos que harán las delicias del más fan, posiblemente obligándole a completar los retos que plantea el juego.
Chris Burton y Wadjet Games rematan un juego que posiblemente no logre una mención especial en la historia de los videojuegos pero que a buen seguro ningún aficionado al género debería obviar.
